Welsh hotel 'cuts 100 jobs' so it can house migrants as residents camp out in protest

Migrant crisis will get 'significantly more serious' warns Ellwood

A Welsh hotel has reportedly made as many as 100 staff redundant, as it prepares to accommodate asylum seekers at its premises, angry residents have claimed.

Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli finds itself at the centre of a dispute between local residents and the Home Office over plans to house around 250 migrants at the spa retreat.

Carmarthenshire council attempted to block the move through a High Court injunction last week, but failed.

Protesters have now set up camp as they try to force the government to change its mind.

The decision by the Home Office to commandeer the hotel for asylum seekers has enraged the local community.

In an interview with GB News, a man called Errol said: "One of the primary hotels is apparently about to be taken over for purposes of migrant housing.

"The local community are up in arms and apparently 100 jobs are set to go."

A former hotel employee said she felt "very emotional" about the management's decision to close the property and make her redundant.

Gemma Parker, 39, told WalesOnline: "I’m angry, I’m sad, there’s nothing I can say.

"I don’t know how I feel. I will probably go home and cry my eyes out because I know that’s it, there is no more. I’ve only been here eight months but we are a family.”

Protesters say the hotel is in the wrong place to house asylum seekers.

Four were arrested by police on Friday, after they were called out to deal with several incidents

Robert Lloyd, a spokesman for the Furnace Action Committee, said protesters stopped "lorry loads" of beds from being delivered.

"We also know that microwave ovens will need to be delivered, because the hotel kitchens won't be used and the people will need a microwave to heat up meals three times a day," he said.

"All this kit has not arrived, so they can't move in the asylum seekers."

Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn urged the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, to "pause and review" her plans for the asylum seekers.

In a letter to the Home Office, he wrote: "There is an urgent need for the Home Office to pause and review the dispersal of asylum seekers to the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli, both to ease the pressures on local services and to address the potentially serious and escalating tensions.

"Dyfed-Powys Police have been required to draw upon resources from across the force area to manage this extremely difficult situation.

"This is not sustainable, and they are continually assessing staffing capabilities and officer welfare, which will likely result in an imminent withdrawal of officers from the location.

“It is becoming an increasingly difficult situation to navigate and manage from a policing perspective”.

The Commissioner also pointed out that Home Office is going against Welsh Government’s strategy to accommodate asylum seekers, which is to house people in a dispersed model.

Carmarthenshire County Council said it was powerless to stop the Home Office after its application for an injunction was refused.

In a message on its website, the council wrote: "Asylum and immigration are non-devolved issues, and neither Carmarthenshire County Council nor Welsh Government can prevent the Home Office from placing asylum seekers in our County."

Express.co.uk has attempted to contact the hotel for comment over the job losses, but has received no reply as yet.
