A ban on advertising assisted dying is to be debated as the controversial Bill returns to Parliament.
The regulation of substances to be used by a terminally ill person to bring about their death is also due to be discussed by MPs in the Commons on Friday.

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is undergoing a second day of report stage, with various amendments likely to be debated and possibly voted on. Its third reading – where a vote is taken on the overall Bill – could take place next Friday.
The Bill, backed by the Express' Give Us Our Last Rights crusade, passed second reading stage by a majority of 55 during a historic vote in November, which saw MPs support the principle of assisted dying.

MPs issued warning over language during tense debate
MPs have been urged to mind their language as they debate the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill after words like “murder” and “suicide” were used.
Liberal Democrat MP Caroline Voaden (South Devon), whose husband died of oesophageal cancer, said it is “so wrong” to use language like this.
Her voice cracking with emotion, she said: “I’d just like to take issue with some of the language being used.
“We’ve heard the word ‘murder’, ‘killing’, ‘suicide’.
“Twenty-three years ago next week my husband died of terminal cancer. He was in extreme pain and was given morphine to relieve his pain. And, as the pain got worse, he was given more morphine so that he could die gently and not in complete agony.
“This is about helping people die in a civilised way and helping their families not go through a horrendous experience of watching a loved one die in agony.
“To call it murder and killing is so wrong, and I think we have a duty to mind our language about this Bill. It’s about helping people die quickly and with dignity, it’s about assisted dying.”

MP calls for tighter ban on advertising assisted dying
An MP has called for a tighter ban around advertising proposed assisted suicide, as he said adverts could turn into a public information campaign promoting the service.
Labour MP Paul Waugh (Rochdale) proposed an amendment to one by party colleague Kim Leadbeater (Spen Valley) on advertisements, meaning restrictions could only be changed in future with an act of Parliament.
Mr Waugh said: “Why do we want to restrict advertising about assisted dying? Not just because such adverts could appear crass or insensitive, not just because we worry private companies can profit from death, it’s because advertisers know they influence choices.”
He continued: “Advertising works because we human beings are suggestible. Prone to messaging, visual clues and hints. Older people are bombarded with adverts for everything from stairlifts to care homes. One person’s advert, though, is another person’s public information campaign.
“It’s not impossible to imagine a secretary of state in future who passionately believes in the merits of assisted dying to authorise such a campaign. It could be a Government-approved plot line in a soap opera, it could be an ad read out by a podcaster that ever so subtly sounds like it’s a news item or even their own opinion.
“Many in this House rightly try to protect teenagers from online harms. But the online harm of an ad for a website about assisted dying shared on TikTok could be a reality without the tighter safeguards in my amendment.”

Assisted dying is for 'when all hope is gone'
Campaigner Nathaniel Dye is living with terminal bowel cancer and more than 50 tumours in his lungs.
In a speech, he said that he would soon face a time when there is “no light at the end of the tunnel”.
He added: “Assisted dying is for when all hope, even for the most optimistic people - and I consider myself that type of person - when all hope is gone.”
Nathaniel also challenged the perception that all disabled people oppose the Bill.
He said: “I’m disabled, for various reasons, and I consider this Bill completely safe.”

Richard Tice declares support for assisted dying
Reform MP Richard Tice stopped to have his photo taken with supporters of the Bill.
He told the Express he was supporting efforts to change the law.
He added: “I’ve had a personal experience that drew me to this side of the debate.
“It’s a big debate, it’s an important debate, arguably we’re not getting enough time in Parliament to debate it to the duration that people would like.
“But I’m delighted that we’re able to have that debate.”
Mr Tice added: “Surely we should be able to design a system with the appropriate safeguards…for those who want to go down this route, while at the same time having the best palliative care and the best hospice system in the world.”

Labour MP speaks out about father taking own life
Former Labour MP Paul Blomfield, who now chairs Dignity in Dying, also addressed the crowds.
He has previously spoken about his father’s decision to take his own life while suffering from terminal cancer 14 years ago.
Mr Blomfield said: “It's a bit of a role reversal for me to be on the outside of this place lobbying in, having spent 14 years as a member of parliament until I retired last July.
“But I was delighted at that point to take over as chair of this extraordinary people-powered movement.”
Mr Blomfield said his father was one of thousands of people who “die badly because they have no other option”.
He added: “Those experiences are what drives me to be here and drives the massive public support that there is for law change in every constituency in the country.
“And that's a message that we have all been involved in trying to reach MPs with, and it's that that's brought us to the brink of law change.”

Campaigners begin gathering in Parliament Square
Dignity in Dying’s supporters have gathered in Parliament Square to show their support for the Bill ahead of the debate.
Addressing the crowd, the organisation’s chief executive, Sarah Wooton, said she believed MPs would back the legislation again at third reading because “something has shifted”.
She added: “The public understands. Medical opinion has shifted. The momentum is with us, and I hope that Parliament is listening.”
Supporters wearing the group’s signature pink chanted together: “Yes to dignity.”

Assisted dying — the Express campaign so far
The debate in the Commons will be another crucial day of scrutiny and improvements to tighten the Bill — and another milestone for the Daily Express Give Us Our Last Rights crusade.
For more than three years, this newspaper has given a voice to those affected by the UK’s ban on assisted dying.
Long before the national debate was reignited by Dame Esther Rantzen’s powerful intervention, we began sharing the stories of those fighting to change the law.

MPs raise concerns about loophole in assisted dying bill
Earlier this week, a group of charities wrote to MPs to express “serious concerns” about what they described as an “anorexia loophole”, arguing people with eating disorders could end up qualifying for assisted dying because of the physical consequences of their illness.
But an amendment preventing a person meeting the requirements for an assisted death “solely as a result of voluntarily stopping eating or drinking” – tabled by Labour’s Naz Shah – was accepted by Kim Leadbeater without a vote last month.
Ms Leadbeater said this, combined with existing safeguards in the Bill, would rule out people with anorexia falling into its scope.
As it stands, the proposed legislation would allow terminally ill adults in England and Wales, with fewer than six months to live, to apply for an assisted death, subject to approval by two doctors and a panel featuring a social worker, senior legal figure and psychiatrist.
MPs are entitled to have a free vote on the Bill and any amendments, meaning they vote according to their conscience rather than along party lines.

Campaigners expected to demonstrate outside Parliament
Demonstrators are once again expected to gather outside Parliament to make their views known on the Bill.
Disability campaigner George Fielding, representing campaign group Not Dead Yet UK, argued the Bill “risks state-sanctioned suicide”.
He added: “It risks making people feel like a burden while ignoring the social, economic and systemic pressures that deny people the treatment and dignity they need to live.
“This is not choice. This is coercion, masquerading as compassion.”
But Claire Macdonald, director of My Death, My Decision, which is in favour of assisted dying, said the public mood is clear that change is needed.

MPs may change vote on assisted dying - reports
Various reports have indicated some MPs who voted in favour last year could withdraw their support amid concerns around safeguards and how much scrutiny the proposed legislation has received, while others might switch to supporting a Bill that backers argue has been strengthened over time.
Opinion in the medical community has been divided, with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) expressing concern but some MPs who are doctors are among the Bill’s strongest supporters.

Esther Rantzen urges MPs to give terminally ill 'confidence and hope’
Dame Esther Rantzen has called on MPs to let terminally ill people like her “face the future with confidence and hope”, as the assisted dying Bill returns to the Commons on Friday.
The veteran broadcaster, 84, will watch from home as the landmark legislation undergoes several more hours of scrutiny and votes on amendments.
In a message to MPs who will soon decide whether the Bill should continue on its journey to becoming law, she said: “Please remember the vast majority of the public urgently need your vote."

What is our Give Us Our Last Rights crusade?
The Assisted Dying Bill is backed by the Express's Give Us Our Last Rights crusade, which was launched in 2022 and calls for a fairer, more compassionate system.
Supported by Dame Esther Rantzen, we launched a petition calling for a Parliamentary debate and a vote of conscience by MPs in conjunction with charity Dignity in Dying which says the current law offers families no protection or support.
