A Virginia State University student was shot Sunday night at an apartment house off campus, and the university, in a suburb of Richmond, was placed on lockdown, according to the school.

       The student was shot just after 8 p.m. at the University Apartments at Ettrick, the university said. The student was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not immediately described.

       The university quoted Chesterfield County police as saying no immediate threat existed to the campus. But the university said late Sunday that the campus remained on lockdown as a precaution while authorities investigate.
