An 18-year-old man was arrested Friday in connection with fatally shooting his Uber driver in March during a West Side carjacking.
Edmond Harris, 18, is accused of killing Javier Ramos, 46, on March 23 and was taken into federal custody Friday morning. Harris had an initial appearance Friday afternoon where he pleaded not guilty to carjacking, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and causing death through the use of a firearm, Joseph D. Fitzpatrick, assistant U.S. attorney of the Northern District of Illinois, said in a news release.
Harris was ordered to remain in federal custody as he awaits an Aug. 10 hearing, Fitzpatrick said.
The Chicago Police Department at the time said the attack happened in the 3700 block of West Douglas Boulevard at about 3:40 a.m. on March 23.
In late April, Harris was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated vehicular hijacking in a separate incident that occurred in Oak Park in January, federal officials said.
Harris allegedly fired a shot into a car sitting in the 1100 block of South Maple Avenue near Maple Park the morning of Jan. 20, striking the driver. Harris then got in the car and fled north, police said at the time. The driver survived his injuries, police said.
Ramos, of Franklin Park, left behind a 9-year-old daughter, his father, two sisters and a brother.
A vigil attended by about 150 people, including Ramos’ family members, was held at North Park in Franklin Park in late March after his killing. Attendees listened to tributes and emotional recollections about Ramos both in English and Spanish during the vigil.
“We are angry that this happened to you,” Hortencia Ramos, his cousin, said at the March vigil. “You didn’t deserve this. No one deserves to live in fear to do a decent honorable job to provide for their family and not come home because of gun violence in our streets.’
The charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of death.
