KUALA LUMPUR: An e-hailing driver and his brother managed to detain an armed suspect who tried to steal their car, says Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Farouk Eshak.
He said the incident occurred at 2.22pm on Thursday (June 24).
"The 31-year-old man and his elder brother had just parked their car near the Masjid Kampung Melayu Ampang in order to buy groceries nearby. The elder brother then spotted a man in their car who was attempting to drive away," he said in a statement on Saturday (June 26).
He said the two brothers ran to their car and managed to capture the suspect.
"He was handed over to the police shortly after. Upon further checks we found a machete in his bag.
The 40-year-old suspect is a local man who is unemployed and did not have a prior record," he said, adding that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamines.
ACP Mohamad Farouk said the suspect has been remanded until Monday to facilitate further investigations.
"We are investigating the case as attempted vehicle theft, possession of a dangerous weapon and drug consumption," he said.
