Care home worker's anguish at losing her job after refusing Covid jab

Louise Akester, 36, of Hull, has worked at the city's Alderson House, which has 32 elderly residents, for the last three years.

But she wants to wait to be vaccinated, and lost her job because of the new Government law which makes the double jab mandatory for care home staff from Thursday.

The mum-of-three wept and described how it was "so emotional" saying goodbye to the residents and staff.

"It is just so unfair," she said in an online video post. "I just can't understand what the Government is doing."

She added: "I have had Covid, I lost my sense of smell and taste for five days, but I trust my body to fight it.

"I would rather trust my natural immunity and then get the vaccine once it has passed its trials in 2023."

She wore PPE, was tested three times a week and followed all protection controls.

Louise added: "I could return as a visitor to the home as they do not have to be vaccinated which is why it is so odd."

She earned less than £10,000 a year on the national minimum wage.

She added: "I was definitely not doing it for the money, I was doing it for love of the job."
