MAB using its planes to provide cargo services for now

MALAYSIA Airlines Bhd (MAB) has been using its planes to provide cargo services following the disruption of air travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

In a parliamentary written reply, he explained that the planes provided cargo services, known as the Passenger-to-Cargo (P2C), which utilises the cargo belly of the airplane.“MAB also operates Cargo-In-Cabin (CIC), where the cargo is placed in the overhead stowage compartments, closets and under the seats of passengers. Both of these P2C and CIC flights do not require any aircraft modifications,” he said.

Dr Wee also said that in 2020, MAB handled 1,612 P2C and CIC flights.

“As at July 31, 2021, MAB has operated a total of 2,033 P2C and CIC flights,” he said.

He said it provided services to destinations such as New Delhi, Madras, Mumbai, Sydney, Melbourne, Beijing and Hong Kong, among others.

“The P2C and CIC flights are just temporary measures for MAB to help it to generate revenue under its recovery plan while it waits for passenger demand for air travel to return to normalcy,” he added.
