JOHOR BARU: A 50-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly scamming at least 10 customers with claims of an “affordable” catering service.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the woman allegedly charged customers RM8 per person for her event catering services.

“She advertised her services for weddings and engagement events on social media and her customers were mostly attracted by the low price she offered.

“One of her customers paid the suspect RM4,400 for an event with 500 people, inclusive of deejay services.

“However, on the day of the event on June 4, the suspect did not meet the agreed food quantity and the food sent to the event was spoiled.

“After the customer called to complain about the matter, the suspect promised to resend the food but it apparently never came,” he told a press conference after attending a promotion ceremony for 118 police personnel at state police headquarters here on Wednesday (June 8).

He said such incidents caused uneasiness to the customers and their guests.

The woman was arrested on Monday (June 6), he said.

As of Wednesday, 10 police reports involving a total sum of RM53,380 have been lodged against her, he added.

“Her customers also shared their experiences on social media.

“I believe more customers involved in similar cases will come forward to lodge police reports after this.

“I urge the public to be careful about engaging services that charge low prices or those that sound too good to be true.

"Caterers usually charge at least around RM12 per person,” he said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
