D.C. Fire and EMS personnel on Saturday afternoon freed a 5-year-old boy whose foot was stuck in an escalator at the Hirshhorn Museum, officials said.
The child’s injuries were not life-threatening and he was taken to a hospital for observation, Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo said.

“He somehow got his foot jammed in where the moving part meets the side wall, but these types of emergencies — our specialized operations personnel, this is something we train for,” he said.
Rescuers were dispatched to the contemporary art museum on the National Mall shortly after 1 p.m. and freed the boy in about 20 minutes, Maggiolo said. “The child was calm and conscious and alert the whole time,” he said.
About 40 personnel and six vehicles responded, including two heavy rescue squads, a hazardous materials unit, an engine company and a hook-and-ladder truck, he said.
