Queen Elizabeth II was a great lover of chocolate, according to Darren McGrady, the former personal chef to Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry.

In conversation with HELLO!, Darren said: "She is absolutely a chocoholic."

According to the insider she would gladly gobble up any and all chocolate desserts, but she did have a favourite.

He said: "Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on, she would choose, especially chocolate perfection pie."

Darren gave People the recipe: "It’s layers of chocolate mousse, a layer of cinnamon cream and a layer of meringue."

Naturally, the Queen also enjoyed a chocolate cake to mark her birthday each year.

Chocolate perfection pie may be a royal favourite, but non-royals can make it at home too. It's not the simplest recipe, but it's certainly fit for a Queen.

The recipe serves eight people, so is perfect for hosting a dinner party. Alternatively, whip it up for a chocolatey birthday treat.

       Method

Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly grease a nine-inch tart pan and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

To make the pie crust, grab a large bowl or food processor and combine the flour and salt. Chop the butter into the flour using your hands or a pastry cutter (or pulse it in the food processor) until the butter looks like fine crumbs. Add the egg yolk and three tbsp heavy cream and mix. Add another tbsp of cream if the mixture feels to dry to come together.

Lightly flour a surface and roll out the dough to 1/3-inch thick. Place it on the pan and press the dough against the bottom and sides.

Line the crust with parchment paper and pie weights. Par-bake until the crust edges start to brown at the edges, for around 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the parchment and pie weights and cool to room temperature.

To prepare the filling, grab a mixing bowl and place over a pot of boiling water. Add the eggs, cinnamon, sugar, vinegar and salt, and whisk until the mixture starts to foam up slightly (around three minutes). Take off the heat and whisk again until the mixture becomes creamy and forms ribbons in the batter (another three minutes). Pour the egg mixture over the cooled crust and bake in the oven until the filling has risen and is firm to the touch. This should take about 15 minutes. Carefully place on a cooling rack and allow the filling to sink back into the shell.

To make the topping, partially melt the semi-sweet chocolate in the microwave. Carefully add the egg yolks and half a cup of water, then whisk until combined. Spoon half of the chocolate over the pie filling, then bake pie in the oven for another five minutes. Place the pie on a cooling rack and cool completely.

Grab a large bowl and beat the heavy cream and cinnamon until it makes stiff peaks. Spread half of the whipped cream over the chocolate layer.

Fold the rest of the whipped cream into the remaining chocolate mixture and spread on top of the whipped cream. Decorate with plenty of grated white chocolate and refrigerate until set for about an hour. Take it out of the pan, slice up and serve. Enjoy!

Queen Elizabeth II isn't the only royal known for being partial to a piece of chocolate (or 10). Princess Kate revealed the biggest chocholic in her household. However, there is another royal who can't bear it.
