The incredible ancient city that even Alexander the Great couldn't conquer

Deep in the Taurus mountains in Turkey lies an ancient city that today stands deserted and rarely visited by tourists.

Its location offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and is well worth the effort to visit.

The ruins make a perfect day trip from the beach resorts of Antalya, easily accessible by car - just a 45-minute drive.

The city is full of historical intrigue and was once coveted as a prize by one of Europe's greatest generals and kings - Alexander the Great.

Steep mountain slopes and rocky terrain made the city almost impregnable to invading armies. The once-powerful city of Termessos is one of Turkey's most spectacular archaeological gems.

It boats gigantic mausoleums, vast underground cisterns, temples, imposing city walls and a breathtaking theatre perched on a hilltop.

The city lies within Güllük Mountain National Park, which together with the ruins is on the list to become a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The ancient city was first mentioned in Homer's epic tale the Illiad, which recounts the last few weeks of the ten-year siege of Troy.

However, its first historical mention dates back to 334 BC, when Alexander the Great attempted to capture it.

Thwarted in his aims, the legendary Macedonian king decided to leave Termessos alone, redirecting his army towards Sagalassos.

As a result, Termessos became one of only two cities in Asia Minor, the other being Sillyon, that the Macedonian army was not able to conquer.

Along one of its streets lie the tombs of the city's rich and powerful - some small, others huge. Unfortunately, over the centuries thieves broke into them, stealing anything of value.

Perhaps the highlight of the city is its magnificent ancient Greek theatre, from where the visitor can get superb mountain views.

It was built in the Hellenistic period, following the best Greek practice.

The theatre is made from hewn stones and its auditorium, which could seat 4200 people, exceeds the half-circle.

Moreover, the stage building is separated from the auditorium by open passages. There are no vaulted substructures, characteristic of later, Roman theatres.

In the Roman period, during the 2nd century AD, the theatre underwent significant alternations.
