Angela Rayner is planning to hit Right to Buy discounts by two-thirds in an attempt to make it harder for people to buy their council houses.

Labour's Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing wants to undo the scheme famously brought in by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1980.

Ms Rayner wants to cut the discount of 70 percent down to about 25 percent.

She will also more than triple the amount of time someone has to live in a council home before qualifying to buy it.

The Telegraph reports that Ms Rayner could scrap Right to Buy for new council homes.

Ms Rayner is pursuing the new restrictions on Right to Buy despite having used the programme to buy her own council home.

She bought her property under Right to Buy in Stockport back in 2007, selling it in 2015 for a £48,000 profit.

According to reports, Ms Rayner will argue the new restrictions are needed to help provide more social housing.

She has also promised to reverse the trend of more than double the council homes being destroyed than ones being built each year.

It has been reported that Chancellor Rachel Reeves will hand Ms Rayner an extra £1billion when she unveils her budget this autumn.

Ms Rayner reportedly plans to double council house building in the UK with the extra cash.

A senior government source told The Times: “Angela’s ambitions on social and council housing have the full backing of the prime minister and chancellor, and that will become even clearer in the weeks ahead.

"They are joined at the hip when it comes to getting Britain building.”
