Queen's 'bizarre' favourite cocktail breaks British royal tradition with 'unique' twist

The Queen's preferred cocktail is very "unique to her", according to royal commentators. The monarch's enjoyment of Dubonnet, a sweet, aromatised wine-based aperitif, was highlighted as slightly "bizarre" given its history and present popularity. Noah Rothbaum, one of the world's leading cocktail experts, spoke to the Royally Obsessed podcast about the Royal Family's drink choices.

He told listeners: "She has her Dubonnet cocktail, which is like two parts Dubonnet to one part gin.

"It's a little weird because there's a great schism in Dubonnets.

"The Dubonnet that's produced in Europe is different than the Dubonnet that's produced in America.

"The formulas are slightly different - though the one in America now tastes more like the one in Europe."

Mr Rothbaum continued: "It was very popular in the 60s and 70s and then kind of disappeared for a while.

"In other parts of the world, they are enduringly popular.

"So it makes a lot of sense that the Queen would be a fan of it.

"But it is sort of bizarre, it's not a traditional Pimms cup."

Host Rachel Bowie added: "It's not something that most people have even tried before.

"I've even had a hard time finding it in a store.

       "It's very unique to her."

The beverage was the favourite drink of The Queen Mother as well.

She liked it with 30 percent gin, 70 percent Dubonnet and a slice of lemon under the ice.

The late royal was once noted to have said before a trip: "I think that I will take two small bottles of Dubonnet and gin with me this morning, in case it is needed."

The Queen likes her two parts Dubonnet and one part gin with two cubes of ice and a lemon slice.

She reportedly has this before lunch every day.
