British Army dogs are to get goggles and combat vests as part of a ￡3 million kit upgrade to their working wardrobe.

       The new “canine catalogue” will support and train a pack of more than 500 military working dogs so that they can achieve tasks that range from entering hostile environments, to protecting their handlers.

       The new kit, which will fit a range of breeds from German shepherds to springer spaniels and Labradors, will include protective equipment such as blast goggles for eyes, hearing protection, and fleece-lined safety boots with rubber soles for their paws.

       Other items of kit include flotation devices for activities that involve water, cooling vests that can lower a dog’s temperature in hot climates and harnesses that allow dogs to be strapped onto soldiers who are parachuting into zones.

       The animals are trained in detecting explosives, arms, vehicles and drugs and also provide protection and assistance to their handlers.

       Working across the British Army, RAF, Ministry of Defence (MoD) Police, Germany Guard Service, MoD Guard Service and regimental mascots, the Canine Support Solution Contract also aims to ensure that the dogs are given enriching, stimulating activities so that they are kept active and entertained while also working.

       Von Wolf K9 Sport & Service Dog Equipment Limited has been awarded the contract for five years, The Times reported.

       Liam Brown, operations manager of defence, equipment and support, the procurement arm of the Ministry of Defence, said: “The welfare and security of all military working dogs and handlers is of paramount importance to us, and this contract with Von Wolf will enhance our offering by catering to their needs and specific requirements in the most efficient way.”

       Sally Dickinson, director of Von Wolf, said the contract “underscores our commitment to providing the best possible support to the UK’s military working dogs, ensuring they have the equipment needed to thrive in both training and operational environments”.

       “This is more than just a business opportunity for us – it’s a responsibility we take to heart, knowing that the safety and wellbeing of these remarkable animals play a crucial role in our nation’s security,” she said.

       The contract will also supply everyday products such as waste bags, bowls, balls, leads and harnesses, as well as specialist exercise aids and agility equipment such as tunnels, weave poles, jumps and, crucially, toys.

       An MoD spokesman said: “Dogs are the Armed Forces best friend and have invaluable roles in combat: from mine-clearing to sniffing out danger to help keep Britain safe.

       “This contract will help train more than 500 military working dogs, from German shepherds to springer spaniels.”
