KANGAR: Two men, a farmer and an unemployed, were charged at the Magistrate’s Court here today (Feb 7) with trafficking in 266kg of compressed lumps of cannabis at Simpang Empat, here last month.
Anas Shakir, 33, and Tuan Amiruldin Tuan Ali, 29, nodded as a sign they understood when the charge was read out to them before Magistrate Siti Nor Hasliza Md Ali.
They were alleged to have committed the offence in front of an unnumbered house at Kampung Lat Seribu, Simpang Empat, here at 8.40am on Jan 24.
The charge, framed under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a death penalty upon conviction.
No plea was recorded and the court set April 7 for remention pending the chemistry report.
Perlis deputy public prosecutor Alia Suzila Chek Pi prosecuted, while both accused were not represented.
On Jan 24, police arrested six men, including the two accused, suspected of being drug transporters and seized more than 260kg of compressed lumps of cannabis estimated at RM668,300 in three raids in Perlis.
All suspects were tested positive for drugs.
Perlis police chief Datuk Surina Saad, in a press conference on Jan 27, said police believed the drugs were brought in from Thailand to Perlis by a syndicate using the service of “transporters” consisting of unemployed individuals, farmers, labourers and mechanics with payments of around RM6,000 to RM7,000. - Bernama
