The aircraft landed safely at its destination.

A source told the Sun last night: “It was quite a bang.

“It’s a one-in-a-million chance which should ever really happen but the passengers and crew are lucky the aircraft were flying in the same direction and the speed of the falling ice was relatively low.

“If it had happened when the planes were flying in opposite directions, the impact could have been catastrophic.”

A BA spokesman said: “There was no need for an emergency descent or landing.

“Our teams have been working hard behind the scenes and another aircraft is currently positioning from Montego Bay to San Jose to bring passengers home who had journeys delayed.”
