The British are at it again! Ireland fury as Republic 'lumped into' same group in poll

A 2014 YouGov poll – re-shared this week on the organisations’s social media – looked into the accents people in the UK liked and disliked the most. Twitter users were more interested in the fact Ireland was classed, in one lump, as “Southern Irish” than in the actual scores produced by the poll.

Jack Lahart asked: “Where to start with this tweet?”

He listed his key points of disapproval: “‘British accents’ for a map that includes the Republic? ‘Southern Irish’ – not a thing.

“Lumping all of the Republic into one accent? Have you heard someone from Donegal speak? someone from Cork?”

He added: “In summary, the Brits are, indeed, at it again.”

‘@nscrut_’ joked: “‘British accents’… ‘Southern Irish’? Feels like pretty big news I must have missed somehow?”

‘$1000 crab’ added: “‘Southern Irish’ is cringe, yes, but being included in ‘British isles’ – a fate worse than death.”

The Government in Ireland does not officially recognise the term “British Isles”.

Despite all this, some suggested the row – which led to 'Southern Irish' 'trending' on Twitter – had been overplayed, with Ireland having actually been paid a compliment.

Author Ben Cobley highlighted that the poll showed Britons are rather fond of what was labelled the ‘Southern Irish’ accent.

‘Southern Irish’ was found to be the best agent to have for being considered attractive, showing net 42, 11 points ahead of Received Pronunciation’.

Mr Cobley wrote on Twitter: “As offence-taking goes, this was pretty good I thought.

“An opinion poll says that British people really like the ‘Southern Irish' accent'.

“You respond to it by having a go at the English for being so damned unfriendly…”

But as per Twitter’s usual trend, others said the row did not go far enough.

What about the different Welsh and Northern Irish accepts that have been lumped together, some cried.

‘SG’, for example, wrote: “In South Wales every town has a different accent; how can you say ‘Welsh’?

“And don't get my started on the faux-scouse North-Walian accent!”

Liam added: “You are having a laugh if you think people in Essex and Oxford have the same accent.”

While the Irish may be upset to see their country nominally reintroduced to the UK, others – particularly Brummies, Scousers and Mancunians – will likely be disappointed to see their accents are correctly labelled but considered to unattractive.
