KYOTO -- A 58-year-old man was arrested on Oct. 12 on suspicion of confinement resulting in injury after allegedly giving a spiked drink to a female care worker who came to his home in this western Japan city.
According to Kyoto Prefectural Police's Shimogyo Police Station, the unemployed man from Kyoto's Shimogyo Ward was in a state that required nursing care, and the woman visited his home once or twice a week to provide him with care such as cooking and cleaning.
The suspect was arrested for allegedly rendering a nursing-care worker, 45, from the city's Kamigyo Ward, unconscious by serving her a drink laced with sleeping pills and other substances when she visited his house at around 6:20 p.m. on July 4, and then confining her at his house until around 7:30 p.m. He allegedly made her suffer from acute drug intoxication, including disturbed consciousness, until the next morning.
The suspect has reportedly denied the allegations, telling investigators, "I served her drinks, but I didn't put any drugs in them."
According to the police station, the woman is believed to have lost consciousness as soon as she consumed the drink, and after waking up, she left the suspect's house on her own to go to the next care site. To prevent potentially being drugged, she would normally not consume drinks offered at clients' homes, but on the day in question she did accept one. The police believe that there was no sexual damage.
