‘Self-deprecating’ Sarah Ferguson admits ‘world's press has written about my mistakes’

The Duchess of York, 61, has opened up about her experience as a mother and being in the public sphere. She stressed that, despite being “self-deprecating”, she considers herself to be “a really good mum” to Princess Beatrice, 32, and Princess Eugenie, 31.

The Duchess told People magazine: "I'm self-deprecating and British. But [one thing] is I'm a really good mum.

“And I'm a good mom because, in growing up, when the girls used to say, 'Why can't we do that?'

"I would say, ‘Well, I've already made those mistakes. The world's press has written about my mistakes, so you don't need to make them now. So I've gone ahead of you to clear the way so that you can dream and grow and be who you are.’”

Sarah has enjoyed a year of good news from her daughters and closest circle.

Youngest Eugenie welcomed baby August in February.

And Princess Beatrice is expecting her first child with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi later this year.

Buckingham Palace announced Beatrice’s baby news in May.

She and Mr Mapelli Mozzi tied the knot in a private lockdown wedding last year accompanied by a very restricted number of guests.

Sarah also expressed her "great joy" at her goddaughter getting engaged.
