MELAKA: The yet-to-be-registered Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) party is aiming to contest in next month’s Melaka state election.

Its pro-tem president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said Muda’s candidates would be fielded as part of the Opposition bloc.

Asked about the number of state seats his party was targeting, Syed Saddiq said negotiations were still ongoing.

The former youth and sports minister said his party had decided to contest to reform the political landscape of Melaka.

“We must understand why the election was called just because of power grab among Umno leaders in the state.

“But we can’t blame Umno alone as the Opposition (in the state) should also not have accepted ‘frogs’ (party hoppers).

“Now, the state election will be held during a pandemic at a cost of RM46mil,” he added.

Syed Saddiq said Muda was not yet a registered political party and it would work with the Opposition to field its candidates.

Nominations for the election have been set for Nov 8 while polling is on Nov 20.

The polls were triggered following the dissolution of the Melaka state assembly after Sungai Udang assemblyman Datuk Seri Idris Haron and three other assemblymen withdrew their support for then chief minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
