YAMAGATA -- A man who visited a police station in the northern Japan prefecture of Yamagata and reported that there was a corpse at his home has been arrested, police said.
The man, 51-year-old Nobuyuki Suzuki, an agricultural assistant from the prefectural city of Higashine, was arrested by officers from Murayama Police Station on Nov. 5 on suspicion of corpse abandonment.
Police were not immediately able to identify the body's sex due to decomposition, suggesting the person had been dead for some time. Prefectural police will conduct an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death, and are trying to identify the body.
Suzuki is specifically accused of abandoning the corpse at his home until Nov. 4. Shortly after noon the same day, he visited the police station with a relative and told officers "There's a corpse at my home." Police found the body at the house that evening.
Prefectural police have not disclosed whether Suzuki has admitted to the allegations against him or released information on his family situation, the specific place where the body was found, or information that could lead to the deceased's identification, on the grounds that it would hinder their investigation.
