KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested two locals who they believed used a fake RM100 note at a supermarket in Tawau.
Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin on Wednesday (April 7) said the 21-year-old salesman and 25-year-old courier company employee were arrested at 10.45pm the day before.
He said police had also seized the fake RM100 used during a transaction at a sundry shop.
Police also seized a Perodua Axia and two mobile phones from the suspects as part of their investigations into the case, he said.
He added the arrest came following a police report lodged by the victim.
ACP Jasmin said one of the suspects had used the counterfeit RM100 banknote to make payment for some items and to obtain change in genuine currency.
He said police there were now on alert for others who may try to use fake cash.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code.
If convicted the men could face imprisonment of up to 20 years and fines.
Public were advised to be aware of the difference between counterfeit money and genuine money.
He noted all Malaysian currency notes had 10 security features.
