KUALA NERUS: A 6m-long reticulated python, weighing about 120kg, has been captured in a canal in Kampung Gong Awang Lib in Mengabang Telipot, near here.

Kuala Terengganu/Kuala Nerus Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Norulhaida Md Rashid said they received a call about the python at 8.30pm on Sunday.

“We deployed eight members to the scene. The snake was found by villagers in a canal near the road.

“Our members had difficulty catching it. Apart from its large size and length, it also acted aggressively. It took us about 30 minutes to capture the reptile,” she said when met at the scene, Bernama reported.

Norulhaida said the snake was brought to the APM centre to be kept before it was handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department.

A resident who spotted the snake, Mohd Fazrie Mohamad Fauzi, 35, said he believed with the capture of the python, the problem of missing cows belonging to farmers in the village was resolved.

“On Sunday, I noticed that one of my cows was missing, so I went out to look around the area when I saw the python in the canal.

“Last month, a cow belonging to a villager also went missing. I believe it was eaten by the same snake.

“Thankfully, the snake was caught because the location is close to the residential area with children often playing near the canal,” said the 35-year-old mechanic.
