Nine crews from fire stations across the city and county attended the incident in Beaumont Leys. Staff raised the alarm just before 10.45am after the factory began to fill with smoke.

       A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call from the site stating that the factory filling with smoke, with the roof possibly on fire."

       The factory has been evacuated and everyone has been accounted for.

       A Walkers spokesperson said: “Our Bursom Road site in Leicester was safely evacuated this morning due to a fire on the roof of the building.

       "The fire has now been brought under control and the fire brigade remains on site as a precautionary measure.

       "Everybody on site has been accounted for.”

       The blaze comes as Walkers has been experiencing supply chain issues.

       The company previously confirmed that an IT upgrade was behind the shortage of its crisps.

       A Walkers spokesman said: “A recent IT system upgrade has disrupted the supply of some of our products.

       “We're doing everything we can to increase production and get people's favourites back on shelves.

       "We're very sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
