The Tory rebellion over the Rwanda Bill appears to be melting away ahead of a crunch vote on Rishi Sunak’s flagship policy.

Tory rebels gathered ahead of the vote this evening, with a source telling The Independent the “mood of the meeting was to support the government” on the Bill’s third reading.

No 10 said Mr Sunak is “confident” of victory despite a rebellion by around 60 Tory MPs in support of amendments last night.

A Downing Street source said: “This is the toughest legislation ever brought before parliament to tackle illegal migration. It will make it clear that if you come here illegally you will not be able to stay.”

Earlier, an MP predicted Tory rebels would “melt like snowflakes on a deck” by the time of the crunch vote.

The Sun reported Tory rebels decided they would end up toppling Mr Sunak if they voted against the Bill and they didn’t want to “blow up the government”.

19 minutes ago Jeremy Corbyn says Rwanda bill blames refugees for being victims

The MP for Islington North said he had met desperate victims of war, human rights abuse and poverty in the refugee camps of Calais.

He said: “We have to work with other countries to deal with the desperation of refugees. This bill blames those people for being victims.

“It plays into the narrative of the most backward, horrible remarks made in our national newspapers about asylum seekers. Without ever recognising people who have sought asylum legally in our country. Tomorrow they will be our doctors, our lawyers and our teachers.”

24 minutes ago Jess Phillips says each person sent to Rwanda will cost £169,000

The Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley said that everyone is voting for a bill that they have absolutely no idea how much it is going to cost.

“We haven’t been given that information. There was a view each person sent to Rwanda will cost £169,000.”

She compared that to the £42 given to every child raped in 2022 under the Government’s Sexual Abuse for Children’s Fund.

“What political capital walking around for a third bill for something that won’t work. 150 judges can be found under the sofa by the PM when cases of rape victims wait 7 years to get in front of a judge.”

She called the Rwanda bill a waste of taxpayer’s money and Government time and asked what happens to the victims of human trafficking.

31 minutes ago Tim Farron says Government ‘talks tough but acts weak'

The Liberal Democrat MP told the Commons the real issue is the 165,000 backlog of asylum cases.

He said: “People smugglers may well decide to bring people into this country and go under the radar but not declare asylum at all.”

He said 19 European countries take more migrants than the UK and people want to come because they believe in Britain and that it is a “safe place to raise a family” and have religious freedoms.

He added: “It will take more than this tawdry government and the shabby legislation to undermine that reputation overseas.”

39 minutes ago Conservative MP Sir William Cash has said he will be voting against the Rwanda Bill on third reading

Speaking in the Commons, Sir William said: “I want this Bill to succeed and the sole reason I shall be voting against this Bill will be because, on third reading, I don’t believe – to use the Home Secretary’s own words – that this is the toughest immigration legislation that we could produce, nor do I think we’ve done whatever it takes.”

He added: “I wish the Government well, but I do have to say that I can’t support this in all conscience because I’ve set out my case and I’m not going to retract it on principle.”

39 minutes ago Liam Fox says Rwanda deterrent should inspire other European countries

The North Somerset MP said this is the one chance “we get to pass the Rwanda legislation”.

He told The Commons: “Political infringements of the ECHR are nothing to a duty to stop the people suffocating in lorries or drowning in the Channel particularly when France is a country to ditch the judgements of the ECHR when it suits them when it comes to deportation.

“Our deterrent will be even greater if we pass this legislation and convince other countries to do the same in a synergistic way.”

53 minutes ago Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper laments Tory ‘chaos'

She blasted the £400m scheme as Emperor’s new clothes.

She said she expected the bill to pass the house today but added: “The Home Secretary is wandering naked around this chamber waving a little treaty as a fig leaf to hide his modesty behind. I admit he doesn’t have much modesty to hide.”

She added Rishi Sunak’s authority was “in tatters”.

“The only thing the Tories all seem to agree on is that the scheme is failing. The prime minister is failing and they know it.”

She said only Labour would end hotel use and track asylum seekers lost in the system.

       Barney Davis 17 January 2024 20:42

1 hour ago James Cleverly said he has ‘respect’ for Tory MPs who sought to strengthen the Rwanda Bill

Speaking during the Bill’s third reading, the Home Secretary told the Commons: “We are united in the agreement that stopping the boats… and getting (the) Rwanda partnership up and running is of the utmost importance.

“And having a debate about how to get the policy right is of course what this House is for, that is our collective job, and I respect my good friends and colleagues on my side for putting forward amendments in good faith in order to do what they believe will strengthen the Bill.”
