KUALA LUMPUR: A 41-year-old woman was cheated of more than RM30,000 of her savings after falling victim to a fake cryptocurrency investment scheme.

City Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Mahidisham Ishak said the victim responded to an advertisement online that promised returns of 400% within a month.

"She saw the advert on a social media site on Dec 10 and was then put into a Telegram group that gave her instructions to register and invest into digital currency (cryptocurrency)," he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 27).

The victim was then given an account to manage the supposed investment and made seven transactions worth RM33,800 into two bank accounts provided by the syndicate.

"On Jan 15, the victim checked her account and saw that it had RM147,114 but she could not withdraw any of the funds. She was told that a payment of RM29,423 was required before any withdrawals could be made.

"A police report was then lodged on Jan 26 after the victim realised that she had been cheated of her money," he said.
