PETALING JAYA: The comments in Tun Dr Mahathir’s Mohamad blog that he could be hauled up by authorities for being critical of the country’s justice system are merely cynical remarks, his office clarifies.
The office of the former prime minister said Dr Mahathir’s posting on serambichedet.com had triggered plenty of reaction online.
“These reactions could be a result of people not reading the post in its entirety, or failing to catch that his (Dr Mahathir’s) remarks were cynical.
“Among those who commented on the blog post included (former prime minister) Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“In the blog post, Dr Mahathir wrote how anyone, including himself, could be called up for questioning, as a form of intimidation to scare people against criticising acts of injustices.
“The statement is cynical, if one reads it in its entirety,” said Dr Mahathir’s office in a statement on Tuesday (April 5).
The office also pointed out that the post had also received attention from the police.
“Even the police had to come out with a statement that Dr Mahathir is being probed under any new investigation,” said the office.
The office added that Dr Mahathir had not been investigated by authorities prior to the 14th General Election for issuing statements that are critical of injustices within the government.
“These are the same things that Dr Mahathir had tried to express in his latest post.
“The point is, anyone who dares to speak out about injustice, they must prepare to face intimidation, including being investigated,” said the office.
In Dr Mahathir’s blog post, the elder statesman pointed out that Najib had yet to spend a day in jail despite being convicted for corruption.
Dr Mahathir said in contrast, he would get questioned for criticising injustices while a person who got caught for stealing a chicken would go to prison immediately.
