PETALING JAYA: Despite the more than four million Covid-19 cases and 34,000 deaths over the last two years, people are still flouting the rules and going about town even when their MySejahtera status is red.

Many are not wearing face masks, while social distancing is also being neglected.

With the government relying on people to self-regulate as the country transitions into the endemic phase from April 1, the statistics are not encouraging.

In 2021 alone, police issued compounds to 112,452 people for standard operating procedure (SOP) violations, according to Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA).

Nationwide statistics show that a further 11,936 bodies and organisations were issued compounds in the same period.

Klang Valley folk were the biggest culprits, with 24,963 people in Selangor and 21,429 people in Kuala Lumpur slapped with compounds.

Three states recorded individual compounds of over 9,000 in 2021: Perak, with 13,965 individuals fined, was the third highest followed by Johor (9,159 compounds) and Sabah (9,112 summons).

Terengganu recorded the fewest individual compounds, at 1,681. It also had 184 compounds issued to bodies and organisations, the third lowest in that category.

Selangor (4,422), Kuala Lumpur (1,646) and Perak (1,832) also registered the highest number of compounds for bodies and organisations.

Perlis had the fewest at only 45 issued. This year alone, police issued compounds to 9,332 individuals until March 21.

As in 2021, the Klang Valley recorded the most infractions. A total of 1,258 people were issued compounds in Selangor, while 3,663 individuals in Kuala Lumpur were fined.

No police compounds have been issued in Terengganu and Kelantan this year.

“Most of the compounds are issued for failing to follow social distancing measures. Another common offence is failing to register with MySejahtera,” KDNKA director Comm Datuk Hazani Ghazali said when contacted.

Failure to register via MySejahtera or via manual registration topped the list of offences recorded by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, with 417 cases as at March 21.

“This year, we have already recorded 1,065 cases of failure to adhere to the SOP,” said ministry enforcement director Azman Adam.

Other offences registered by the ministry include carrying out activities not allowed (130), failure to follow social distancing (61), not wearing a face mask (50) and not displaying the capacity at premises (27).
