The Duke of Cambridge met his wife, Kate Middleton while he was studying away from home in Scotland. But during the first year of his history of art course, which started in 2001, the Duke felt a “wobble” and considered dropping out.

       At the time, William candidly described feeling “daunted” at his new student life.

       The future King even spoke to the Prince of Wales, who helped him consider different options.

       Addressing rumours he felt unhappy at the institution, he told Press Association: "I was like most people, I think, when you first come to university.

       “It’s new surroundings, new scenery, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

       "But I went home and talked to my father during the holidays, and throughout that time debated about whether to come back - not seriously… but it did cross my mind.

       "He was very good about it and we chatted a lot, and in the end we both realised - I definitely realised - that I had to come back."

       The book ‘Kate: The Future Queen’ by royal expert Katie Nicholl details how Kate reportedly also experienced a sudden change of heart when it came to her studies.

       Jasper Selwyn, a careers adviser at Kate’s former school Marlborough College, told Ms Nicholl: “As far as I am aware she had a place confirmed at Edinburgh. She was accepted through the usual UCAS routine.

       “In those days, you applied for five courses and got acceptances and rejections depending on your grades.
