GEORGE TOWN: Over 100 water tanks have been prepared to mitigate the water supply disruption in Penang from Jan 10 to 14, says Chow Kon Yeow.

       The Penang Chief Minister said measures were taken by Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) after receiving public feedback.

       "Originally announced with over 50 water tanks, the count now surpasses 100 water tanks.

       "These measures, including the increase in the number of water tanks, water tankers, static water tanks and others, reflect the dedicated efforts of PBAPP and elected representatives to alleviate the impact on the community," said Chow, who is also PBAPP chairman, on Tuesday (Jan 9).

       He was responding to a petition signed by 19 individuals comprising Penang MPs and assemblymen, which was addressed to Chow and his executive council members.

       Chow said the petition was a request for more water tanks to be deployed to impacted areas.

       "The petitioners did not oppose the operation. We are determined to make this operation a success," he said.

       Meanwhile, checks at supermarkets here found that supply was enough to satisfy demand for bottled drinking water, with no change in pricing.

       Gama Supermarket assistant general manager Neoh Kean Bin said there was no shortage and the supply of bottled water is replenished daily.

       "About 50 cartons are sold daily. We replenish them (stocks) every day and 1.5 litre bottles are in high demand," he said.

       Penang Road Mydin assistant branch manager Ruzaidi Zainon said demand for bottled water escalated over the weekend.

       "There was no crowd (rushing) to purchase it as customers were given ample time to prepare for the water disruption and bottled water is sold everywhere," he said.

       Traders at Cecil Street Market also reported no shortage of supply.

       Pork seller Cheng Chee Keong, 53, said they have stored their own reserves and additional water tanks have been fitted at the market.

       "I only need water to wash and clean the stall. Since many eateries and households will not be cooking during this period, I've reduced my stocks by 40%," he said.

       A total of 590,000 water consumers are set to be affected by the disruption scheduled from 6am on Jan 10 to 6am on Jan 14.

       Works planned also involve ancillary tasks at 22 locations throughout Penang.
