UNZEN, Nagasaki -- A spectacular display of red and yellow autumn leaves has blanketed Mount Unzen in this southwest Japan city, attracting large numbers of visitors.
More than 80 varieties of trees including maples and the Japanese enkianthus -- a shrub belonging to the heath family -- grow naturally in the area, which is designated as a national natural treasure.
A ropeway that ascends to the 1,333-meter Myoken peak from Nita Pass offers visitors views of the autumn colors. Visitors can also take in the views from climbing trails leading to the area's Kunimi and Fugen peaks.
According to Unzen Visitor Center, the prime viewing period for the foliage will last until early November, but the autumn leaves can be enjoyed until around mid-November around the Unzen hot spring resort town, which is located at a lower altitude.
