Zelensky speaks after fire breaks out at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant
Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia facility, which is Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant, has been captured by Russian troops after they attacked the site in the early hours of Friday.
The assault led to a fire breaking out an adjacent training facility, sparking fears of a nuclear disaster. However, it appears that radiation levels remain unchanged.
Speaking of the threat of a nuclear disaster, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky warned the world to “wake up now”.
Russian attacks against Ukraine have intensified in the last couple of days as key cities like Kharkiv, Odessa and Mariupol remain on the brink of collapse due to missile strikes and bombings.
Thousands have been killed or wounded and over a million refugees have fled Ukraine since Russia ordered the invasion last Thursday.

Nato does not seek a conflict with Russia but is “ready” for one, the US has said.
Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, who is meeting Nato foreign ministers in Brussels today, said: “Ours is a defensive alliance. We seek no conflict. But if conflict comes to us we are ready for it and we will defend every inch of Nato territory.
“And overnight, we’ve also seen reports about the attack against a nuclear power plant. This just demonstrates the recklessness of this war and the importance of ending it and the importance of Russia withdrawing all its troops and engaging in good faith in diplomatic efforts.”

1646381997 Mariupol to become new Aleppo, warns deputy mayor
A major humanitarian crisis threatens the besieged city of Mariupol, its deputy mayor has warned.
Sergei Orlov told the BBC that Russia was attacking it indiscriminately, saying the Kremlin was trying to break the city like it did in its bombing of Aleppo during the Syrian civil war.
“We don’t have any civil objects without some damage. Most of the schools, hospitals, kindergartens, living spaces, they are damaged somehow,” the deputy mayor said.
“Today Putin’s style of war is like Aleppo,” he added, warning that it would become as destroyed as the Syrian city within a few days.

1646381471 Nato should ‘consider all options’, Latvia foreign minister says
Nato should “consider all options” when considering how to stop Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Latvia’s foreign minister has said.
Governments “should not exclude” any possibility, Edgars Rinkevics told the BBC’s Today programme.
Earlier in the programme, the former Ukrainian prime minister Oleksiy Honcharuk had said Europe underestimated the lengths Putin will go to. He added that a no-fly zone should be established over Ukraine.
When questioned about these remarks, Rinkevics said: “Well, I think we must do everything that we can. That’s why I’m saying that we should not exclude any options.”
