Wee backs Umno deferring its party polls

KUALA LUMPUR: With their party polls deferred till after the 15th General Election (GE15), both Umno and MCA believe they can fully focus on preparing for the upcoming national polls.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong congratulated fellow Barisan Nasional comrade Umno for amending its constitution to postpone its party election – a move emulating what MCA had done.

“Umno’s move follows the same decision that MCA made over two years ago. It is the same model and template.

“I wish Umno the very best. As fellow component partners in Barisan Nasional, I feel we both share the same vision.

“Our parties want to ensure that our focus is on winning GE15, not party polls,” Dr Wee told reporters after attending Umno’s Hari Raya do at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) yesterday.

He agreed with Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s statement that postponing party elections would ensure stability.

“The reason why you need to do this is to ensure that you give more focus on GE15 preparations, rather than spend the next six months campaigning for party elections.

“For any political party, winning big in a general election is of paramount importance,” said Dr Wee.

Earlier, Umno amended its constitution during an extraordinary general meeting at WTCKL.

The amendment was unanimously approved by 2,586 Umno delegates at the special meeting.

In 2019, MCA amended its party constitution so that party elections would only be held six months after a general election.
