PETALING JAYA: One death has been recorded due to dengue fever in the 34th epidemiological week (Aug 20-26), says Health director-general Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan.

       He said there was an increase in the number of cases from 2,248 to 2,349 (4.3%) from the previous week.

       "Cumulatively, there have been 78,227 cases recorded, which is an increase of 41,574 (113.3%) compared to the number of cases in the same week in 2022.

       "In terms of cumulative deaths, 55 cases were recorded due to dengue fever complications compared to only 22 cases last year.

       "As for Chikungunya, three cases have been recorded, bringing the total to 159," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 5).

       At present there are 82 hotspot localities and Selangor leads with 51.

       This is followed by 22 in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, two each in Negri Sembilan, Perak, Kelantan and Sabah, and one in Penang.

       Dr Muhammad Radzi added that the authorities have taken 2,114 blood samples and 167 urine samples as part of Zika surveillance measures. He added that all tests conducted were negative.

       In the fight against dengue, Dr Muhammad Radzi urged the community to be united and work together especially in maintaining a clean environment.

       He urged that garbage and discarded items be disposed of properly to prevent Aedes mosquitoes from breeding.
