Migrants still determined to cross English Channel despite 'troubling' UK riots

Migrants planning to cross the Channel to Britain say that rioting is “troubling” them – but they remain determined to make the journey, sources report. Thousands waiting in northern France for an illegal dinghy crossing are “fearful” after asylum seekers in Britain sent them footage on apps of migrant centres being targeted.

Clips of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pledging tough action against racist and far-Right demonstrators were also viewed.

A prosecution source in Calais said: “Events in Britain have very much reached those in France wanting to cross. They are being kept updated and are seeing the riots, the anger and the aggression and attacks on where others are staying.

“Some personally know those in the centres which have been targeted.

“Those wanting to cross are scared and worried. They know there is a backlash. But they are as determined as ever.”

They added: “You have to imagine these people have already travelled thousands of miles and risked their lives to get this far.

“They’re prepared to do a very dangerous journey across the Channel. Some are saying it will make them more determined.”

Another source said: “Those wanting to cross are being reassured by the gang leaders that Britain will be OK and that the police will resolve the issues..

“There is a lot of nervousness. The migrants know they are not going to be popular with everyone in Britain.

       “That will not stop them.”

Hundreds of migrants made the perilous journey this week despite the unrest across Britain and more than 17,000 are known to have made the journey so far this year.
