UMTJ, LKIM collaborate to further develop fisheries sector

       KUALA NERUS: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), through its wholly-owned subsidiary UMT Jaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (UMTJ), is collabarating with the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) to further develop and advance the Malaysian fisheries industry.

       UMTJ chairman Datuk Dr Din Adam said through this collaboration, the fisheries sector via drone technology, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and applications (Super Apps) will be introduced and empowered especially in the aspects of the environment, governance, safety, health and social for increased productivity.

       He said also through this collaboration both parties aim to be pioneers in the use of technology in the national fisheries sector, thereby benefitting the fishing community.

       "The collaboration includes research, sharing of expertise, data and modern technology where the primary aim includes the development and sustainable management of the country's fisheries for the benefit of the fishing community," he said.

       At the same time, this initiative will also enable UMTJ and LKIM to pioneer the production of "big data" and subsequently make more accurate analyses so that information can be shared with the relevant parties, he told reporters at the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between UMTJ and LKIM here Monday (Jan 15).

       Also present at the event were LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil and UMT vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Ghaffar.

       Elaborating further, Din said this joint venture is expected to increase productivity by 30% and fishermen's income by 25% in the next few years.

       "The conventional methods used by fishermen today do not give them good returns," he said.
