School closed due to suspected norovirus outbreak

Kelbourne Park Primary and its nursery, which are near Maryhill, west Glasgow, had to shut on Monday after an outbreak of sickness and diarrhoea with children and a "large number" of staff infected.

Glasgow City Council director of education Maureen McKenna said: "We had an outbreak of sickness and diarrhoea in one of our schools and we closed it on Monday. We closed it because a large number of staff were affected and there were children with underlying health issues."

Staff at the school have told bosses they've suffered with symptoms this week, Glasgow Live reports.

Andrea MacBeath, headteacher, said: "I know this has been an exceptionally disrupted term already but due to an outbreak of sickness and diarrhoea across staff and children we have decided to close on Monday. Staff numbers were diminished on Friday and several staff have contacted me over the weekend to say that they too have become ill.

"I can only apologise for the upset that is likely to cause but I am hoping that an extra day will give staff time to recuperate and ensure that everyone can come back to school safely on Tuesday."

Also called the "winter vomiting bug", Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. It can be very unpleasant, but usually goes away in about two days, according to the NHS.

People who get the bug should rest and have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

The NHS says they should "stay off school or work until they have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least two days. This is when you're most infectious".

They should not visit hospital or care homes during this time.
