KOTA KINABALU: The celebration of diversity is Sabah’s unique way of uniting its multi-ethnic people, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said it is important for the existing spirit of unity to be nurtured at all times and also “upgraded” from time to time to instil love for the state and country.

Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is constantly emphasising on unity, so that the bond among the multi-ethnic people of Sabah is protected at all times, he said.

“We need to continue to maintain this spirit of goodwill and consensus because it is the backbone of our strength to continue to live in a climate of peace, security and prosperity,” he said at the state-level Deepavali celebration on Saturday.

Such a celebration, he said, added to the uniqueness of Sabah which is known for its harmony in a multiracial and multi-ethnic society.

“That is why in the context of a festival, we can see everyone coming together to celebrate festivals including Deepavali, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Christmas Day, among others.

“In the context of the Malaysian Family, a culture of partnership and consensus is a necessary practice, and not just in the context of festive sharing, but something each of us must practise in our daily lives so that the peace and stability in the country will continue to remain strong,” he said in his speech read out by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir. This year’s state-level Deepavali celebration was themed “Cultivating Unity, Celebrating Diversity”.
