Leave-voting shellfish producer Nerys Edwards has defended Britain's decision to leave the European Union despite short-term disruptions to her company's European trade. Five years on from the Brexit referendum Ms Edwards has told the German TV channel DW News that voting to leave was still a "good thing" and dismissed the fears of doom-mongers who talk down Britain's future prospects.

Ms Edwards told DW News: "I think I was a little naive.

"I knew we would have some changes, I knew the paperwork would change.

"I didn't realize quite how drastically or significantly that would be.

"I still believe that long-term it is a good thing."

Border controls implemented following Brexit have made importing products to the EU from Britain more difficult.

Fresh food producers have suffered heavy losses

Like others in the shellfish export industry, Ms. Edwards told DW she was struggling will new customs regulations.

The Welsh shellfish exporter's vote on confidence in Brexit Britain comes as some fisherman decided to hit out at the Government on the anniversary of Brexit.

One skipper Graham Nicholas, told the Independent: "I voted [Tory] at the last election to get Brexit done, and they've sold us down the f*****g river.

"I'd never vote again except they say you can't moan if you don’t vote – and I’ll admit I like a good moan.”

Mr Nicholas added: "But if we’re so unimportant, how comes the Europeans fought so f****g hard for their fishermen?

       “We got stitched up.

"Fishing was used to win Brexit and then we got sold out.”

Cornish Fish Producers Organisation boss Paul Trebilcock said the fishing sector had been "sacrificed."

Mr Trebilcock said: “Fishing was used as a poster boy for the whole Brexit project and then, when it came to the final analysis, it was basically sacrificed to secure a trade deal.

“For the government to say this is a good result, it’s derisory."
