Willkommen! Germany axes travel ban for UK tourists as rules for double-jabbed eased

The nation's public health institute announced on Monday the United Kingdom is no longer considered an area “of variant concern”. It prompted the lifting of a travel ban and easing of travel rules imposed on Britons.

The UK downgraded from the highest alert "virus variant area" to the second-highest level - a "high-incidence area”.

Other countries that have seen the travel ban lifted following the downgrade are Russia, India and Portugal.

Fully-vaccinated Britons, or those who have antibodies to the disease, will be allowed to travel to Germany quarantine-free.

Unvaccinated travellers will be able to end self-isolation after five days with proof of a negative Covid test.

The health body stated on its website: "If you have spent time in a high incidence area prior to entry, the relevant test may not be conducted earlier than five days after entry.”

The change will come into force from Wednesday, July 7.

The decision follows Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to the UK last week, where she met the Prime Minister at his country residence of Chequers.

On Friday, Boris Johnson hosted Ms Merkel for a bilateral meeting as part of the Chancellor’s last visit to the UK before stepping down.
