PETALING JAYA: Dredging works are underway at the Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis jetties to aid ferry services, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said that a working visit was also conducted to the Langkawi ferry terminal earlier.
"These dredging works are needed to allow ferry services operations between Langkawi, Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis to work normally and to fulfil the needs of the locals and tourists that visit Pulau Langkawi.
"As of now both the Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis jetties handle around 100,000 ferry passengers monthly. This number is expected to rise in the third and fourth quarter of the year," he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (June 9).
Current projections show that works at the Kuala Kedah jetty will be completed by September, and in February 2023 for the Kuala Perlis jetty.
"I also took this opportunity to have dialogues with the district officer and heads of the state government, politicians, ferry operators and tourism industry players to find the best solutions under the powers of the Transport Ministry for the benefit of Pulau Langkawi," he said.
