PETALING JAYA: Claims circulating online about individuals aged 70 and above having to surrender their driving licence to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) are false, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“Actually, Section 30 of the Road Transport Act allows drivers to voluntarily surrender their licence due to unsatisfactory health conditions which may endanger other road users,” said the Transport Minister in a Facebook post yesterday.
He said denying senior citizens their driving licence was the last resort, and made reference to an earlier statement.
Last Saturday, Dr Wee called for a holistic approach to be adopted to determine the competency of an individual to drive, including the need for mobility and other socio-economic factors, aside from age alone.
He added that it was also the responsibility of individuals with declining health to surrender their licence, and he hoped all stakeholders would create an effective and inclusive plan for the public.
