Lee Anderson says Rishi Sunak won't be PM after general election

Lee Anderson swiped that Rishi Sunak could "drop a million pounds down every chimney" in the UK and still not win the general election.

The Reform UK MP dismissed the prospect of the Prime Minister leading the Conservatives to victory after dire local election results.

Mr Anderson, a former Tory deputy chairman, told Sky News: “I think the public’s already made their mind up.

“I think Rishi Sunak could fly over the UK tonight in a helicopter and drop a million pounds down every chimney and they would still vote him out come October."

Elsewhere during a round of morning interviews, the Red Wall MP insisted insurgent party Reform will win seats at the next general election.

He told BBC's Radio 4 Today programme: "We're here to stay, we're making inroads, we're a small party, we were polling 3-5% last year now we're polling around the 15% mark.

"Our trajectory is going up and up and up and the Tory party is going down and down and down.

"And come the general election this party is going to win seats, so a vote for Reform will be a vote for Reform."

Reform UK came third in the Blackpool South by-election just 117 votes behind the Tories.

And in Sunderland, the Nigel Farage-linked party beat the Conservatives into third place in 16 of the 25 seats up for grabs.

Mr Anderson said: "It was a good night for Labour, let's be honest. It was a very poor night for the Conservative Party, especially in the Brexit-type areas.

"We got nearly 17% of the vote share in Blackpool, which I think is tremendous, that's above our polling nationally.

"Up and down the country we did well. In Sunderland we beat the Tories in 16 out of 25 seats there."
