Chancellor Rachel Reeves has scrapped a new ￡320million dual carriageway that many hoped could stop traffic congestion in West Sussex.
The A27 Arundel Bypass was a cause for optimism for locals after the area had become busier and busiers with tourist footfall rising. In March 2023, Highways England announced the bypass would be deferred to the 2025 to 2030 Roads Investment Period (RIS3).
After branding the development "poor value for money", Ms Reeves announced on Monday that the plan will now be scrapped. She added that there are ￡1billion of various transport projects committed to next year that are "unfunded."
The news will come as a positive for some. The Arundel Bypass Neighbourhood Committee (ABNC) had previously argued against the development because it could "ruin the countryside in the area."
They said: "This delay to the next scheme's period, 2025 to 2030, is a first step in the right direction - cancellation.

"National Highways should now revisit the Arundel Alternative - and Government should invest a large part of the hundreds of millions saved in sustainable transport."
Ms Reeves made the announcement alongside a flurry of other spending cuts as she looks to address the ￡20billion 'black hole' in the public finances.
Addressing the House of Commons on Monday, the Labour Chancellor accused the previous Conservative administration of “covering up the true state of the public finances."
She added that she is taking the “difficult decision” of cutting back on a number of public spending programs to balance the books.

Ms Reeves also announced that the Government is scrapping winter fuel payments for pensioners, making them means-tested instead.
The Tories' plan for new hospitals is now also under review. She also cancelled the railway restorations, saving ￡85million.
Former Chancellor Jeremy Hunt challenged Ms Reeves, saying: “Today she will fool absolutely none to lay the grounds for tax rises.”
