BRITAIN's motorists will be encouraged to use environmentally-friendly E10 fuel from this week - which will replace standard petrol.
E5 fuel will be replaced as the default petrol by greener E10 fuel from tomorrow (September 1) - and will be introduced on forecourts up and down the country.
The move is part of the Government's efforts to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions to net-zero - the first step in paving the way towards fully electric cars on the road.
Diesel fuel will still be available but it is estimated that around 600,000 vehicles that usually take unleaded petrol won't be compatible with the E10 version.
This could leave drivers stuck paying for pricier super unleaded petrol, which is currently referred to as E5.

WHAT IS ETHANOL AND HOW IS IT USED IN CAR PETROL?
Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel produced from the fermentation of a range of plants, including sugarcane and grains, along with their by-products.
Unlike regular unleaded petrol, ethanol fuel is said to be partially atmospherically carbon-neutral.
This is because as the plants that will become biofuel grow, they reportedly absorb more carbon dioxide than what will be released into the air during fuel production and combustion.
This partially offsets the greenhouse gas emissions produced by its production and use, but by just how much is still an active topic of debate.

WHEN WILL E10 BE INTRODUCED?
The new type of fuel will become standard from September 1.
It will replace E5 petrol at forecourts across the UK.
Vehicles that cannot use E10 will still be able to fill up with E5 petrol - which will become the more expensive super unleaded option.

WHICH GARAGES WILL STILL SELL E5 PETROL?
Most forecourts will continue to offer E5 petrol for the around 600,000 car owners that won't be able to use E10 fuel.
However, there will be a significant number of petrol stations that won't be able to serve customers that can't use E10.
Asda won't sell any E5 petrol at any of its 320 forecourts in the UK. Tesco will offer E5 petrol at around 90% of its 600 garages, meaning there will be approximately 60 sites that do not offer the fuel.
Sainsbury's also said that most of its more than 300 sites will continue to sell E5. Esso, which has around 1,200 branded service stations in the UK, said up to 200 will only offer E10 fuel.

HOW WILL E10 AFFECT YOUR PETROL ECONOMY?
Though E10 petrol is cleaner to burn than the previous E5 standard, it’s not quite as efficient.
You’ll likely see a minor hit to your fuel economy, but we’re talking 0.1 or 0.2 of an MPG at the very worst, so not huge margins.

E10 COULD REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS FROM PETROL CARS BY 2%
Increasing the content of bioethanol in petrol should result in lower emissions produced by your car, plus less reliance on fossil fuels — albeit a very minor difference.
It’s suggested that CO2 emissions from petrol cars in the UK should drop by about 2% overall with the switch to E10.

EXPLAINED: WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I USE E10 PETROL BY MISTAKE?
Don't panic if you use E10 in a non-compatible petrol engine by mistake.
It's not like putting diesel in a petrol car and shouldn't be a problem as a one-off.
However, repeated use of E10 petrol in a non-compatible vehicle could damage your car's engine in the long-run.

ALL CARS BUILT AFTER 2011 CAN SUPPORT E10 FUEL
If your car is built after 2011, this simple answer is yes. Every petrol car built since then has been required to support E10.
Even if your car is a little older than that, the chances are you’ll be able to put E10 petrol into your car without worrying.
If your car is older than 2000 though, it’s possible it won’t support E10 fuel.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO MODIFY AN ENGINE TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH E10 FUEL
The Sun has asked car manufacturers including Ford, Honda and Volkswagen and unfortunately it isn't possible to adapt your car to make it compatible with the greener fuel.
Your only alternatives would be paying for the more premium unleaded version or getting a new car.

IT MAY COST MORE TO FILL UP IF YOUR CAR DOESN'T TAKE E10
Around 600,000 vehicles are estimated to be incompatible with E10 fuel.
The only alternative could be super unleaded, which is more expensive than standard petrol.
The average price of standard petrol was 135.4p per litre last week, while super unleaded was 145.5p, according to research by the AA,
But you could pay up to 20p more per litre for super unleaded across the country with petrol prices ranging from 140p to as much as 160p.

PETROL PUMPS WILL NOW INCLUDE 'E5' AND 'E10' LABELS TO OFFER CHOICE OF UNLEADED FUELS
Currently, petrol pumps are labelled based on whether you are using unleaded, super unleaded or diesel.
From September 1, the pumps will include E10 or E5 labels so you use the right unleaded fuel for your engine.
The E5 petrol will most likely be the more expensive option.

SWITCH TO E10 WON'T BE IMMEDIATE, AS NOT ALL FORECOURTS WILL HAVE IT AT ONCE
The switch to E10 won't be immediate. Forecourts across the country can start offering E10 from September and they won't all switch over at once.

THE SUN EXPLAINS: HOW TO CUT THE PRICE OF PETROL AND DIESEL
Here's a handy guide on how to save yourself money AND fuel:
Make your car more fuel-efficient. Keep your tyres inflated, remove the roof rack and turn your air-con. This will reduce your engine power and the amount of fuel you're using. Drive slow and steady. The brake is a money burner, so avoid slamming it on. Accelerating slowly will also save you fuel and money. Be a bargain hunter. Find the cheapest petrol or diesel in your area. DIESEL & ELECTRIC CAR DRIVES WON'T BE AFFECTED BY THE CHANGES
Anyone who drives a diesel or electric car won't be impacted by the change.

NOT ALL CARS WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH E10
All petrol cars can use E5 fuel.
Most vehicles made after 2011 and even in the late 1990s should also be able able to run on E10.
But some classic cars and older vehicles, plus mopeds and a handful of motors from the early 2000s cannot use E10 as it will damage the motor or the engine.
This could mean petrol drivers have to pay for the more expensive "super" grade premium fuel.

E10 PETROL - BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
The government has introduced E10 as the standard petrol to reduce transport-related CO2 emissions.
The key difference between E10 petrol and E5 is the level of ethanol.
E10 petrol contains 10% renewable ethanol compare with the 5% in E5.
The higher percentage of ethanol in E10 helps reduce the amount of CO2 a vehicle produces.
This is because ethanol absorbs CO2 as it is produced.
It’s estimated that the more environmentally-friendly fuel could reduce CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year.
