'Not official!' Eagled-eyed royal fans spot key difference with Prince George's tie

Prince William, who is President of the Football Association, wore an official FA navy tie with red and white slanted stripes. Some royal fans pointed out that the stripes on Prince George's tie went in the opposite direction. This may have been because children's FA ties are hard to come by and the Cambridges' next best option may have been a school tie for their son.

One royal watcher commented on a photo on Twitter in which George's tie stands out as different to those worn by men around him.

The person said: "Prince William is wearing an official Football Association tie.

"The FA has a few different ties with different stripe thicknesses and arrangements (e.g. guy behind George).

"As George’s tie has stripes going to wrong way, I doubt it is an official FA tie."

Others said they were surprised to see the young royal adopting such a formal dress code for the England v Germany game.

One said they had expected him to wear his England jersey, which he donned for his birthday snaps two years ago.

The person wrote: "I would have broken the rules and let him dress in a jersey.

"Reading the news George went to see the footie, I thought aww imagine him as a child watching the game live. Suit and tie was a shock."

And yet another said: "Lovely photo but I think they should have let him wear an England shirt."

A fourth person who watched England's victory over Germany said: "I realise that young Prince George is the future king but surely he should be in an England shirt with his little face painted - not a suit and tie."

But one man hit back at people "moaning" about George's choice of outfit.

He said: "All those moaning about what G is wearing: Could it just be, at almost eight years old, G is not that different to other kids who at that age want to have a say in what they wear?

"Maybe he wanted to look like his father?

"Or he′s had that suit for a while and was never allowed to wear it?"

The Duke of Cambridge was seen jumping up to celebrate England's win over Germany at Wembley Stadium tonight.

The Duchess of Cambridge remained composed as she stood clapping alongside her eldest son and husband.

The Cambridges were seated in executive seats in the stadium packed with around 43,000 football fans.

Little George, who will turn eight next month, looked interested in the game and enthusiastically got involved with the crowds.

Before the kick-off, he stood patiently while his parents joined the crowds in singing the national anthem.

And he was seen clapping for the England players as he watched on from his prime location.

William, 39, and Kate, 39, were also spotted turning around to chat to former England captain David Beckham and his son Romeo.

The Three Lions will now play either Sweden or Ukraine in their next match on Saturday.

The game will be held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome at 8pm UK time.
