Emergency services arrived at the southbound carriageway between junction 34 and junction 33. Two lanes were temporarily closed off, according to LancsLive, following the incident that was reported shortly before 1pm.

       Cumbria Road Watch (CRW) reported on Twitter just before 2pm that the congestion almost extended back to junction 35 (Carnforth).

       At 10 past, it posted an update, noting that queues approaching the collision had reached at least four miles long.

       The chaos didn't end there. Traffic officers were also on their way at 2pm to the northbound carriageway between junction 31a and junction 32 due to a broken down vehicle, according to National Highways.

       Two southbound lanes remained closed at 2.25pm.

       CRW tweeted: “Congestion back to J35 (Carnforth) and delays on A683 Bay Gateway.”

       But by 2.30pm both lanes had reopened.

       Traffic should start to ease in time for rush hour.
