KUCHING: Political parties and aspiring candidates should include environmental commitments in their manifestos for the coming Sarawak state election, says WWF-Malaysia.

       In an open letter to all political parties in Sarawak, WWF-Malaysia conservation director Dr Henry Chan urged future lawmakers to be fully committed to ensuring a healthy and resilient environment in the state.

       "As Sarawak enters the post-Covid-19 recovery era, it is important to remind ourselves, our government leaders as well as lawmakers who chart the future direction of the state to avert catastrophe caused by human folly and to recognise the rich natural capital values Sarawak already has in charting its way forward," he said on Monday (Nov 29).

       Chan said it was important for parties to inform voters of their aspirations and plans for sustainable development.

       "This will allow voters to make informed decisions about electing a representative who champions the environment and equality among all levels of society," he said.

       One of WWF-Malaysia's main requests in the open letter is for effective implementation of sound policies and plans based on environmental sustainability.

       In particular, the NGO called on political parties to adopt a green recovery plan which would further support the conservation and sustainable management of Sarawak's remaining forests, develop a green workforce and step up efforts against poaching and illegal wildlife.

       WWF-Malaysia also urged future lawmakers to give youths equal opportunities to participate in nation-building, avenues to promote their involvement in environmental sustainability and access to information and resources to collectively build a greener Sarawak.
