GEORGE TOWN: Investigation into a viral video showing two traffic policemen escorting a private vehicle along Jalan Bukit Gambir has been completed.
The investigation papers have been concluded and submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s (DPP) office for further action, said state police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.
He said that on May 9, the police recorded a statement from the driver of the car, who is in his 20s, to assist in the probe.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act which carries a fine of not more than RM50,000, a one-year imprisonment, or both.
On May 8, police initiated an investigation after videos showing two traffic policemen escorting a private vehicle along Jalan Bukit Gambir went viral on social media.
The 20-second video, which surfaced at 8.36pm, was uploaded on Facebook by a user named anwarazeez.
It showed a man behind the wheels of a private vehicle and being escorted by two traffic policemen on motorcycles belonging to the police force.
One policeman appeared to stop an oncoming car intending to make a turn, allowing the vehicle to run the red light.
It also showed a car having the right of way abruptly braking, causing the vehicle behind it to also stop suddenly to avoid a collision.
The two traffic policemen escorting the private vehicle have been reassigned to administrative duties pending investigation.
