Nigel Farage is not the man to solve the problems faced by the Tories after their general election drubbing, ex-Cabinet minister Sir Robert Buckland has warned.
The Reform UK leader, now the MP for Clacton, has consistently denied any suggestions that he would consider a return to the party he quit in 1992 in the wake of the Maastricht treaty.

However, he did attend their most recent conference last year, and prior to the election said: "I don't want to join the Conservative Party, I think the better thing to do would be to take it over."
Mr Farage is also on record as saying the party’s members would choose him as their leader if given the chance.
Former Lord High Chancellor and Justice secretary Sir Robert, who stepped down as an MP at the July 4 general election, reflected on the future of his party after its heavy defeat.

He told Express.co.uk: “I think the road is a long one. We have to remember that Labour itself looked like they were absolutely down and out in 2019 and they came back in just five years, partially fuelled by what was frankly an implosion on our side.
“Now the party's got to dust itself down and actually, before worrying about personalities, look at its values, what are we for? What is the Conservative Party?
“When we are at our best, we are a competent party of government that seeks to serve the country and put the country first, it's always been the Conservative way.”
Sir Robert continued: “With that national interest in mind, what do we think is best for the country?

“First of all, people should keep more of their money because they are the best people to judge how they spend their income.
“And secondly, while government is important and government has a role, government should not and must not do everything, because it will do things badly, as we know.
“The Conservative Party does not win from the extreme fringes of politics, and to start thinking that we need to move to the right is a misunderstanding of what happened at the election.
“We will need to get that aspirational value back into the party as well. So we can crack that, then I think the Conservatives can have a road back but that's going to take time and it's really going to take a lot of work for whoever leads us to actually develop those values.”

Kemi Badenoch is currently the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Rishi Sunak, with Priti Patel and Tom Tugendhat also being names in the frame - but One Nation Tory Sir Robert said he was currently reserving judgment.
Sir Robert, who is not ruling out a return to the House of the Commons in the future, explained: “It seems to me that any of those people have the experience and wit to know that the way the party succeeds is from the common ground.
“And I think having worked with Priti and Kemi, all of them, and particularly Priti in government, I wouldn’t have a problem with any of those people, I think they're all politicians who understand the Conservative Party has to be in the mainstream of political life rather than on the fringes.”
One person Sir Robert was clear should not be involved was the former Ukip leader, currently in the United States for the Republican Party Convention.

He said: “Any candidate that thinks welcoming in Nigel Farage to the party is the answer will not be getting my support.
“Because they're not listening to what Nigel himself is saying.
“I know Nigel Farage and he does not want to join the Conservative Party. I’ve seen him say that time and time again and he’s very clear about what his ambitions are.

“He’s not part of the Conservative family. We're not merging with anybody. We are the Conservative Party and we have a distinct role to play in our politics and people want to be able to vote Conservative, but they couldn't because of the competence issue. And that's what we've got to overcome now.”
Mr Sunak remains party leader in a caretaker capacity, and it may take months to replace him, something Sir Robert does not think is a bad thing.
He added: “The party conference should be used as a platform for that debate as well. We shouldn’t rush it, we should do what we did in 2005 and the result there was David Cameron who eventually became Prime Minister.”
